Candida Concerns

A little yeast can cause a lot of damage.

Many forms of fungi live in the human body, one of which is candidiasis or “candida.” In small amounts, candida exists relatively problem-free. If left to multiply out of control, however, candida can contribute to or outright cause a variety of problems.

When your immune system detects something harmful like the candida albicans yeast, it produces antibodies called Immunoglobulins G & A (IgG & IgA).

A high IgG/IgA response to candida can indicate that your body has been exposed to a lot of and is actively trying to fight the yeast off. The longer this reaction persists, the more collateral damage may happen to your GI system. The inflammatory response from the increased antibody response can damage the gut’s lining, which could lead to a leaky gut situation, which in turn can lead to autoimmune conditions.

Let's break it down step by step.

High IgG/IgA response to candida indicates your immune system is making an excess amount of antibodies specifically to fight yeast. This can be a result of a significant presence of candida within your body.

Leaky Gut may result if your immune system is constantly in a stage of fighting off candida. Prolonged inflammation can result in damage to the gut barrier, making it "leaky." Normally, the lining of your gut acts as a permeable wall, keeping bad stuff locked within the gut lumen while allowing valuable nutrients out into the body. If your gut barrier is leaky, however, undigested food particles, toxins, and candida can pass through the gut lining and into your bloodstream.

Autoimmune activity can happen when these particles escape from the gut into the bloodstream, leaving your immune system confused. The immune system then attacks the particles as if they were harmful invaders. Sometimes, your immune system might even mistake your body’s own cells for invaders and begin attacking them too, leading to autoimmune diseases.

In summary, a high IgG/IgA response to candida suggests your immune system is heavily engaged in fighting the yeast. This prolonged battle can damage your gut lining, causing leaky gut which allows harmful particles into your bloodstream, potentially triggering autoimmune reactions where your body mistakenly attacks itself.
