Acupuncture has been used in Asia for thousands of years as a means to promote and support female reproductive health. Treatments have evolved as part of a larger commitment to having healthy babies – both as a means to help a couple successfully conceive as well as go on to have a healthy pregnancy and uncomplicated delivery. Acupuncture treatments throughout the pregnancy can bolster the body’s natural healing powers in an effort to achieve balance and harmony of the mind and body, thereby helping to nurture a strong mother as she creates for herself a positive path towards parenthood.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is based on the theory that an essential life energy, Qi, flows through the body in pathways called meridians. At its most basic, TCM states that when energy flows freely through the meridians health is maintained and that when that flow of energy is somehow obstructed, absent, deficient, excessive, or interrupted, then health and balance are also disrupted and that this, in turn, leads to illness and/or pain. TCM is primarily a means to reestablish a balance of Qi within the body. While acupuncture may get the most attention, it is simply one element within the larger array of the TCM healing arts and a skilled practitioner will know how and when to apply various therapies based on each individuals needs at any given moment.

Acupuncture can be of tremendous benefit over the entire course of a pregnancy. TCM has been used to effectively aid in the management of a myriad of pregnancy related symptoms, including, but not limited to, nausea, vomiting, headaches, back and pelvic pain, fatigue, edema, insomnia, as well as numerous other physical and emotional stresses that may present themselves over these wondrous months. In addition, TCM is also useful in dealing with breech presentation, delayed labor, and post-partum healing.

For a healthy pregnancy, treatment is typically recommended on a monthly basis until the last month at which time weekly treatments will best help prepare mother and child for labor and delivery. Your practitioner will, however, always tailor your treatment according to your needs, issues, and concerns.

Acupuncture and TCM provide a nurturing, mother-centered, safe and gentle means to promote optimum health before, during, and after pregnancy, both for mother and child, and can form the foundation of a life long partnership in health for the whole family.
