Avoiding Detox Symptoms

Does detoxing make you feel junky? Well, if you join us for the 7-day Core Restore Detox, you should encounter significantly less discomfort than with most detox protocols. That’s because it is designed to jump start the detox process and rest your body via the fasting days so your liver doesn’t get so backed up that it can’t keep up with the load, leaving your body a toxic soup for a few days. Even following this protocol, however, you may initially encounter a few “detox symptoms,” like headaches, fatigue, or irritability (I mean more than usual 😉 ). There are several reasons why the first few days of any detox might make you feel lousy and Dr. Hyman addresses them all in his video on the topic found below:

If you don’t have the time for the entire video (it’s only about 6 and a half minutes!), click here for to skim his article instead. If you aren’t feeling great a few days into the detox, or find that detoxing doesn’t seem to be quite enough to shift your health in a more positive direction, consider scheduling a consult with one of our functional medicine doctors to address underlying causes of your health concerns.

Be Informed! It’s Time for Your Annual Functional Physical!

January is always the month we highlight the most foundational aspect of any healthy lifestyle. We call it Be Informed. Without accurate information and a proper perspective, forming goals and addressing areas of opportunity is nearly impossible. The first step to establishing healthy habits and achievable goals is to gather your data.

Our bodies boast a complex communications system constantly exchanging data between cells and systems. Unfortunately, interpreting this data isn’t always as simple. What is this headache telling me? Why are my muscles twitchy? What made my digestion suddenly stop working and how come sleep isn’t as easy as it once was? Gathering data doesn’t always simplify things either. So what if my chlorides are high? I don’t see how that impacts anything!

Gathering data is only the first step; interpreting data and determining how to change that data is your best starting point. That’s exactly what your doctor at Lake Pointe has been trained to do. During a Functional Physical, you’ll take a look at your health history and test a series of biomarkers to gather important information on how your body is functioning. Then your doctor will interpret those results (and any recent test results you may bring in) and combine that data with your health history to form an accurate conclusion regarding the health of your body. From this vantage point, sighting your health goals on the horizon is simplified. Suddenly the numbers are actually communicating something, in a moment your symptoms and your data can be superimposed to form a clear picture. Not only will you gain a better understanding of what all the data means but your doctor will help you form a plan to change that data to better reflect your wishes. There’s no better time to start gathering the facts and forming a plan. Schedule now and Be Informed.

If you could do all of these things every day in one simple step, wouldn’t you? It turns out that all of these benefits and more can be gained from a single source: Reishi. This medicinal mushroom extract used for thousands of years in Asia has become the focus of countless studies, all showing it to be useful in everything from detoxification to mental health benefits to the potential for effective cancer treatment and prevention.

What’s really great is that this same powerful extract has been added to all of Organo’s products to offer a simple daily way to introduce this healthy product into your life. You can easily swap out your cup of morning coffee or tea for an Organo coffee or tea and reap the benefits of making your daily habit a healthy habit. Be Well: The Microwave Mindset

herbal-tea-1410565_1920Instant messaging, instant coffee, instant relief, instant gratification. We’re a culture and a generation unfamiliar with the merits of delayed gratification. We want it yesterday before we even know what we want. This approach has unfortunately filtered into nearly every aspect of modern American life de-meriting the value of everything from long-lasting relationships to saving up for big-ticket purchases. To wait is to lose. That such a falsehood should be so prevalent is an injury to our society. Unfortunately impatience with life in general hasn’t been quarantined to express lanes, drive-throughs, and technological advances, but has spread into the broader concepts of health and healing.

We’ve all heard the phrase “worth waiting for” but many are losing familiarity with the value of something gained through a time-consuming endeavor. When one is not required to put in much effort or delay gratification, the end result can seem much cheapened, and quick fixes rarely result in long-term satisfaction. This is especially true when addressing health. If you’ve spent 38 years accumulating toxins and exhausting your adrenal glands while eating food that was, well… less quality than your body deserved, you will have a difficult time reversing the results overnight. Similarly, if you’ve spent the last 10 days burning the candle at both ends, eating on the run, overextending yourself, and skipping self-care, it seems unfair to expect the cold that resulted from such behavior to be gone after your first dose of EmergenC. Especially when managing health, we have to get back to a mindset that values the time and effort that always back sustainable results.

With a shift in our attitude toward our bodies, recovery truly becomes simpler. Rather than searching for the magic pill that will erase all symptoms and return us to our previous lifestyle (which had probably contributed to the onset of said symptoms in the first place), we can honor the body and healing process by allowing the time, effort, and investment necessary to gain true health. When the cold or flu knock you down, instead of chasing a potent prescription to subdue it, offer your body the rest it needs to fight off the infection and the nutrients and support it needs to replenish. When faced with chronic illness, instead of circumventing the problem or seeking an overnight remedy, find a practitioner who will address the whole body to balance your health needs and set you on a road to healing. The road may seem long from where you stand but gaining new heights is better achieved by a steady climb up the mountain than from a high-jump contest.

So if you’re feeling a bit under the weather, remember that your body was designed to take it. Offer yourself the best care you can and honor the healing benefits of time.
